Steps to good strategy consulting
- Strategy Consultants to focus upon execution. Strategy consulting is often associated with 'vapour ware' - very little execution. Any fly by night consultant can make a dashing visit to your corporate headquarters populate a spreadsheet and say how bad you have been doing your business using your data in a company that you know the best. But still there is a place for these consultants. Most companies want to know 'how' rather than 'what' and 'why'. Execution sells here. Ppts (read vapor ware) don't.
- Strategy Consultants to deal more with people than issues. People needing advice are people. Clients sometimes have their own hidden agenda ( e.g. calling in consultants to gather data so that the CEO can fire a colleague; or, being hired to tell them which vendor to let go). It is all about chemistry when it comes to strategy consulting as this has to do with decision making ( always a function about feelings, emotions and preferences: the gut feel. Not so with consulting in the operational or process areas. Even less in technology consulting. So when consulting is done for people, by people with people - failures are very high.
- Strategy Consultants to know that the chances of a technology or process change getting accepted is high provided it doesn't affect the people running them. If we were to analyse why some of the consulting pescriptions even here have failed it would invariably point us to someone resisting the change and having forgotten to factor in the "people" factor in the prescription.
- Success depends on how much the client and the consultant know about solving the problem.
