Definition
A brief publication containing news and current events, usually geared toward a particular organization or group with common interests. They are usually delivered on a regular basis, ranging from once a day to bi-monthly.
DO's and DON'Ts
- simple look and feel - high resolution pictures, high contrast colours and heavy-load graphics should not be included in the newsletter.
- proper contact information of the sender should be mentioned.
- use of colloquial language - the language used in the newsletter should be simple and such that readers do not have to rush for a dictionary.
- short and comprehensive - the topic of the newsletter should be to the point and self explanatory.
- Stay Away from the Sales Hype
- Write in Third Person - All stories should be written as a third party observer.
- Avoid Technical Jargon - Don't assume your customers know what abbreviations stand for this and that. Keep your stories on an even keel.
- Proofread, Proofread, Proofread - Your newsletter is a reflection of your company. Have several people proofread each story so you can have several perspectives.
Requirements to conform to CAN-SPAM
- Subject line should match the content of the newsletter
- The content should not contain objectionable content like porn, fradulent matter, mis-representation, copyright violations or any bogus content.
- It requires that commercial email be identified as an advertisement and include the sender's valid physical postal address.
- The Newsletter should contain an opt-out option for the recipient.
- The mailer should not contain mis-leading header information.
